در دوران عضدالدوله دیلمی مردی نزد قاضی شهر مال فراوانی به امانت نهاد و به حج رفت . چون بازگشت و مال خویش خواست ، قاضی انکار کرد . صاحب مال شکایت نزد امیر عضدالدوله برد . امیر اندیشید که اگر از قاضی مال را مطالبه کند او انکار خواهد کرد . از این روی چاره ای اندیشید . قاضی را فرخواند و گفت : مال بسیاری برای روز مبادای فرزندانم نزد من است و می خواهم آنرا نزد کسی به امانت بگذارم تا پس از مرگ من به آنان تحویل دهد و از این موضوع هیچ کس حتی فرزندانم نباید اگاه باشند . من وصف امانتداری تو بسیار بشنیده ام بنابراین به خانه رو و جایگاه محکمی برای آن فراهم ساز تا این اموال مرا مخفیانه بدان جای منتقل کنی . قاضی مسرور شد و با خود اندیشید چون عضدالدوله بمیرد چون کسی از راز این مال باخبر نیست می توانم همه ی آنرا برای خود تصاحب کنم . پس با شوق وصف ناپذیری به تهیه ی مقدمات کار پرداخت . عضدالدوله آنگاه مرد مالباخته را فراخواند و گفت : اکنون بنزد قاضی برو و دوباره مالت را طلب کن و بگو اگر امانت مرا باز پس ندهی شکایت تو را نزد امیر عضدالدوله خواهم برد . چون مرد مالباخته نزد قاضی رفت ، قاضی از بیم آنکه شهرتش لکه دار شود و امیر امانتش را بدو نسپارد فورا مال شخص مالباخته را پس داد . امیر چون خبر شد بخندید و قاضی را از شغل خویش برکنار کرد
